Congratulations to Anika Keuck on viola and Owen Dalton on oboe that were selected for the South African National Youth Orchestra (SANYO). This is a great honour and we are exceptionally proud of these 2 students. Only two South African oboe players were chosen with Owen being one of them. Anika has been chosen for SANYO for the 4th consecutive year. No small feat for such young players. Tutor Lize Brown on flute & piccolo serves on the SANYO organising committee, but will also be joining SANYO as a player this year. They will be rehearsing and performing with SANYO in Cape Town, from 10 – 17 July. Your hard work, dedication and passion for music has certainly paid off.

Congratulation to Bianca Lochner and Anneen Uys: they are both awarded the Hennie Joubert Merit Award (awarded for outstanding achievements in UNISA examinations), for both achieving 100% for the Grade 3 Theory of Music examinations. Each receive a money prize and their photos will appear in UNISA’s Musicus magazine. Congratulations once again!

The annual WCMA Prize-Giving was held on 27 November  at Curro Langebaan Hall. All students received awards for their participations and achievements during the year. Congratulations to the four ELITE Musici for 2015: Lourens Pretorius, Sarah Kleynhans, Anika Keuck and Joanné Coetsee. Joanné (photo) was also our Top Achiever for the year.

WCMA entered for the Klassieke Kollig competition presented by Die Burger (a fundraising event for Die Burger Christmas Funds). For this competition, choirs and vocal ensembles enter to be recorded and the Top 20 items are chosen to perform at the Barnyard Theatre in Durbanville on 24 & 25 September 2015. Vocalists Keagen Gertse, Darryn Prinsloo and Lize Brown (all are tutors at WCMA), and the Vredenburg High School Choir (conducted by tutor Lize Brown) decided to enter. Congratulations to Keagen, Darryn and Lize that reached the Finals (performing Hallelujah and The Prayer), and the VHS Choir that reached the Semi-Finals (performing Droom van my geluk and Masithi Amen).
The Wes-Boland Eisteddfod Music categories took place on 17-21 August. WCMA achieved a total of 19 Bronze, 103 Silver, 206 Gold and 239 Cum Laudes!  WCMA also won 62 music categories at the Eisteddfod’s annual Prize-Giving held on Friday 18 September. WCMA was also awarded the West-Boland Eisteddfod shield for the most music categories won, for the 13th consecutive year. A superb achievement! 

We are proud to announce that Owenithe de Bruyn (97%, Rockschool Debut Piano) achieved the highest national grade and overall exam mark, in the June 2015 exam sitting. Well done Owenithe! Click here to view all the Rockschool results. 

Congratulations to three of our male tutors and a student that has been chosen for the Wind- an String Orchestras of the South African National Youth Orchestra (SANYO). They will be attending the winter course in Potchefstroom from 27 June to 2 July 2015, and will perform in Potch and Braamfontein on 2 & 3 July. Keagen Gertse (violin) and Anika Keuck (viola) in front; Darryn Prinsloo (euphonium) and Pieter Strydom (double bass) at the back. Tutor Lize Brown is also on SANYO's organising committee.



Congratulations to WCMA student Lourens Pretorius, for winning the Zoltan Kovats Trophy at the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod for Best Double Bass player! (In 2013 Lourens also won the trophy for Most Promising Classical Guitar player). Well done Lourens!

WCMA achieved excellent results in the recent Trinity Practical examinations in May! Our 2 top achievers: Micaela van der Walt (Initial Violin, 93%) and Michelle Pedro (Initial Piano, 90%). Principal Carina Brown was invited to the Western Cape Government Cultural Affairs Awards Ceremony, yesterday in the Baxter Theatre. To her surprise, she was awarded The Minister’s Special Award for Outstanding Achievement for Women in the Arts and Culture. We are extremely proud of our principal!!!
